About SURF
Our mission is to advance world class science and inspire learning across generations.
Deep underground, scientists at Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) search for answers to the most fundamental questions about the universe. SURF is the United States' deepest underground science laboratory. The facility's depth, rock stability and history make it ideal for sensitive science experiments that need to elude cosmic rays. Researchers are also engaged in biology, geology, and engineering studies at the lab.
Our impact goes beyond the science happening almost a mile underground at SURF. Based on South Dakota's science standards, our education specialists work to create and advance innovative educational programming reaching between 16,000-20,000 students across South Dakota each year.
The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is the front door to science happening at SURF, giving visitors a glimpse into the history of the site, current research happening on site, and future science endeavors. Guests can marvel at the open cut, shop in the museum store or take a docent tour around the site.
